Indonesia menjadi tuan rumah Asian Games dan Asian Para Games pada 2018 dan Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno dipilih sebagai stadion utama penyelenggaraan kedua pesta olahraga tersebut. Karena usia stadion ini yang melewati lebih dari 60 tahun, pemerintah melakukan perbaikan untuk stadion untuk memenuhi kriteria sesuai standar Dewan Olimpiade Asia. Semua bangku panjang kayu dibuang dan diganti dengan kursi tunggal, akhirnya membuatnya menjadi stadion all-seater. Sistem pencahayaannya ditingkatkan dari 1200 lux menjadi 3500 lux
